The focal length of 50mm is supposedly the closest in range and depth to what the human eye interprets, and as such it has enjoyed many years in the limelight as a good general purpose lens, doubling as a 75mm portraiture lens on an APS-C DSLR body.
Along with great image quality and reasonable price, this lens is very light weight and small enough that it will basically fit in your pocket, making it an ideal mobile lens for no further effort.
Optically, the Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens consists of 6 elements organized in 5 groups (with the aperture mechanism featuring 7 diaphragm blades). The minimum distance of focusing is 0.45m and the filter size is 52mm.
As was said previously, this lens is extremely small at just 64x39mm and light at only 155g.
You might think that because this lens is so cheap, that its picture feature must be on the cheap side as well. However, the build quality of this lens is quite decent with a combination of metal and polycarbonate as the primary materials.
The comparatively little rubber focus ring has a very smooth focus and the front element does not rotate with a polarizer attached so this is another positive too - we all know how frustrating a rotating front part with a polarizer is.
All in all the Nikon 50mm 1.8 does not have the same reputation that a lot of the flagship Nikon lenses do, but it is still a quiet and very competent achiever in its own right.
It does not come up short badly in any particular area, maybe the only bad point would be that it is soft on the borders wide open and perhaps contains a slight contrast deficiency too.
Of course for the price, these minor details can easily be overlooked when buying this awesome Nikkor 50mm 1.8.
