Roman shades are often called fabric shades. This is because they combine the beauty and elegance of a fabric drapery and the usefulness of a shade which is able to be manipulated to allow light in or keep light out. This is one of the most beauteous aspects of the Roman Shade is its ability to control the light in your room.

Lighting is an extremely important element of interior design that most people overlook until the necessity of light arises. Light shouldn't simply be used as a necessity, but as an element of the design. It can be manipulated beautifully depending on the time of day, type of room, size and number of windows, among many other variations.

The light in your home is effected by two different attributes in your window covering.

1. The fabric. The sheerness of the fabric is going to have a huge impact in regards to the amount of light let into a home. If the fabric is sheer, more light will be let into the room. This is ideal for many people. The situations in which this may not be ideal include: bedrooms where you have to be able to blackout the windows while sleeping, a room which you would like to appear the same throughout the day, lit only with artificial sources of light.

Also remember that if you do choose a sheer fabric and need it to let in less light this is possible. You are able to purchase something called a 'darkening liner'. This does precisely what it says. It lines the fabric adding a darkening layer that allows less light to get through. This is very helpful if you absolutely wish to have a sheer fabric but need it in the bedroom!

2. The shade. This may seem obvious, however it is funny how many people install shades and then never use them, they always revert back to the artificial light in the room. Like I said, if this is planned, then there is no problem with doing it that way, but you should at least try to open the shades now and then, you might surprise yourself at the brightness of the room. Or you may think that it is a fantastic look for a day party or something similar.
